Information for Instructors

Regarding Library Tour and Database Searching:

It has been our past experience that students do better if the library tour is given at a separate time from the database searching session. Of course we are here to offer our services in the manner that best fits the instructor’s needs.

Here in detail is what we offer:

        1. Library tour which lasts 15-20 minutes covers the following:

  • location of materials (including Rad. Tech and serial)

  • explanation of ALEX, the online Card Catalog

  • explanation of Dewey Classification System

  •  explanation of the difference between journals and magazines

  • services we offer (Circulation; reference; reserves; INFOPASS; Inter-library Loan)

  •  library card and procedure on how to check books in/out

    2. DATABASE searching usually lasts 30-40 minutes and is usually a subject-specific session given in conjunction with an assignment you give the students for writing a research paper. The students get the most out of this session if it is presented just before an actual assignment.

    Database searching covers:

  • how to conduct a database search

  • refine a search

  • narrow down # of search hits

  • print/e-mail articles. (EBSCOhost & INFOTRAC are the 2 we subscribe to)

  • usage of citations in MLA or APA

  • handout of all of the above

  • handout of related Pathfinder
