Distinguishing between Primary and Secondary Sources

YouTube Video on Primary & Secondary Sources

Primary sources are produced, developed, or witnessed by the original author, painter or individual.

For example:

  • an original work of art such as a sculpture or a painting
  • a witness's account of an accident, riot, earthquake, etc.
  • an original literary work such as a poem, novel, diary, memoir, letter, or photograph

Secondary sources analyze, interpret, or otherwise discuss primary sources.

Examples:

  • an encyclopedia article
  • a review of a play or other literary work
  • an article that uses other people's research such as most in Time, Technology News, and UTNE Reader
