Rachel R. Savarino Library at Trocaire College

Material Use Policy

The Library User*
is expected to use all library materials in a responsible manner; is responsible to return books and other library materials in the condition in which the materials were received; is responsible to return all borrowed materials on time.

When items are not returned to the library, the borrower is responsible to pay all replacement costs plus a $20. processing fee for Rachel R. Savarino Library items. If items are borrowed from another library, the borrower is responsible for payment assessed according to the other library’s regulation. Users who fail to return borrowed materials will lose library borrowing privileges. Student grades and/or transcripts will be withheld in the event of outstanding library debts.

DEFINITIONS:
*Library Users
are current and former Trocaire College students, current Trocaire College faculty and staff, members of the Regional Sisters of Mercy (RSM) and community members within the Western New York area.  Community members must be 18 years old or high school seniors. For other circumstances, please discuss with the Library Director.

Library Materials are books, CD-ROMs, periodicals, audio and videotapes and other materials provided by the Library. Borrowed materials can be in-house (Rachel R. Savarino Library, Trocaire College), through Interlibrary Loan, or borrowed directly by the student from another institution with an InfoPass issued by Trocaire College Library.

InfoPass is provided through Trocaire College’s membership in the Western New York Library Resources Council (WNYLRC); its Library Access Project (LAP) enables libraries to work together to allow greater access to library and information resources. The LAP program is designed for library users who need access to resources not available in either the library with which they are affiliated or in other libraries generally open to the public (i.e., area public libraries).

Overdue materials are those which are not returned on time (i.e., on or before the date on the due slip). For in-house and Interlibrary Loan, the materials must be returned to the Trocaire College Library. Material borrowed with an InfoPass or Special Borrower’s card must be returned directly to the institution which owns it.

Lost Items are those items not returned to the library within 30 calendar days following the due date.

PROCEDURES:
All users must have a Trocaire College identification card; for students, this is the student identification with barcode. Staff must also use bar-coded (Trocaire College) identification cards. With proper identification, the community user is issued a card with a barcode by the Library. Reserve and loaned materials must be scanned into the automated system by library staff; all materials for loan must have a date due on the item’s due slip.

Loan Periods:

  • Audiovisuals – 1 week
  • Books & books with CD-ROMs - 4 weeks
  • Periodicals – IN library use only
  • Reference Books – IN library use only
  • Reserve materials – library use only; must have college identification to use

  • Interlibrary Loan
When patrons want material that is not available within the Rachel R. Savarino Library, we ask other agencies to provide it.  This is the process of inter library loan.  Materials borrowed through inter library loan have a circulation period which is specified by the lending library, not the Rachel R. Savarino Library.  We are happy to borrow materials from other libraries, but we must respect the date by which those materials must be returned to their home library.

Borrowing / Returning Items on Reserve in the Library
Borrowers must have Trocaire College Identification to use reserve items in the library. These items will be checked out to the borrower for use in the library. Borrowers must return reserve items to a staff member so the items can be checked back into the system.

Overdues and Fines
Fines must be paid when returning the library material. Payment can be made by check payable to Trocaire College or in cash. Fines accrue when the library is closed, and are $.10 per day for overdue items.

Outstanding fees over $200. will be sent to a Collection Agency.

Lost Items & Replacement Charges
Borrowers who have lost or not returned library materials will be charged for their replacement. A $20.00 processing fee is charged in addition to the replacement price of the item, plus any overdue fines as applicable. Replacement charges may be canceled if lost items are returned; however overdue fines will still be charged. Student grades and/or transcripts will be withheld in the event of outstanding library debts.
